Cyprus

At the end of our holidays we spent 6 days in Cyprus. To get around the island we rented a car at Larnaca airport and so we could go where wanted and stop in some nice places. However we only drove in the southern (Greek) part of Cyprus, it's big enough for a few days and has many places to visit and in the north (Turkish side) there would have been another insurance necessary. The roads were in a good condtion and the car was ok, only the breaks made some strange noises. The weather was sunny and warm, but the visibility wasn't good, often very dusty.

First we drove to the mountains where we stayed 2 days and we visited some small Byzantine churches which have very nice and old frescos inside (UNESCO world hertiage) and we also went walking to a watefall and around the Mount Olympus (with about 1950 meters the highest peak on the island). Then we continued to the west of the island where we slept 2 nights in Polis. The nearby Akamas Peninsula offers good trekking posibilities to some mountains with good viewpoints and also to the Avgas Gorge. The next day we stayed in Paphos which is a popular tourist place and has some good Roman ruins and the Tombs of the Kings to visit (no kings were buried there, but it's nice to see them how they are cut into the rock).

On the way from the west to the east we drove along the southern coast and visited the Aphroidite's Rock and Kourion a nice Roman town near Limasol. In the east we also slept one night and visited Cape Greco, close to it are some nice beaches. On our last day we went to Nicosia (also called Lefkosia), the capital in the center of the island. The old town is divided into a Turkish and Greek part and there's a boarder crossing for pedestrians in the middle of it. On a short hop we went to the other side and visited the main monuments, it's worth to do that as there are some really nice buildings on the other side.
